What is Quota?
Quota, sometimes called 36 points or Chicago, turns Stableford on its head. Instead of everyone aiming at the same thing, each player gets their own points target based on their handicap. From there it is all about beating your own number. That makes Quota one of the fairest games for a mixed group, because nobody is helped or hindered by their standard.
How to play Quota
- Work out your target: 36 minus your course handicap.
- Collect gross Stableford points hole by hole. An eagle is 4, a birdie 3, a par 2, a bogey 1, and a double bogey or worse 0.
- At the end of the round your total is compared against your target.
- Whoever finishes the most points above their target wins. Everyone has put in a stake, and the winner takes the pot.
How it is worked out
Because the handicap already sits in the target, you receive no strokes on individual holes — you play off gross points straight through. Say your course handicap is 14. Your target is 22. Score 25 points and your difference is plus 3. If a playing partner has a target of 30 and scores 28, their difference is minus 2. You win despite having fewer points, because you beat your own target by more.
